How to Unscramble the Mystery of Satellite Descramblers
Satellites communicate with earth and each other through signals. Like a computer, they don’t speak English, but have their own unique system of communication. Because people don’t want other people being able to read or interpret their important e-mails, data files, or any other information which might be transmitted by a satellite, the information signals are first scientifically distorted in some way before being sent. After this distorted signal is received back by the rightful person, satellite descramblers are used to re-create the original information. The satellite’s scrambler is a special device that can either transpose the original signal, or invert the signals, or in some unique way encode the information while at the transmitter. The scrambled information is then unintelligible unless received by a specially equipped receiver (the descrambler) that knows how it was originally scrambled. This process is somewhat different than encryption. With scrambling an additional signal is usually added that makes the original signal difficult to translate. Encryption usually mixes up the message itself. The descrambling process was first invented shortly before World War II and has undergone massive changes since then, especially since the use of satellites. Descrambling the signals of satellites is now done with digitizers used in combination with encryption machines. First the signal is converted in digital form and then it is electronically encrypted and sent. At the receiving end it is descrambled. How does this apply to your use of satellite TV? Dozens of different TV program channels are available for you to choose from, yet all of the programs are coming from the same satellites. You pay to watch only certain TV channels – perhaps you choose to watch only 80 of the hundreds available. Your satellite’s receiver is coded to only descramble the ones that you pay for – the others are blocked from your use. This is a modern use of the technology invented over a half century ago.
